Alex Arthur has given up his European super featherweight crown in an attempt to become world champion. Arthur became Scotland’s first ever European champion for 11 years when he beat Boris Sinitsin in July last year; since then he has made three defences.
His promoter Frank Warren said: “With respect to the European title, we have taken that as far as we can. He will fight in late February and it will be with a view to a world title challenge in the near future.” The 28-year-old from Edinburgh is in the top rankings of the four main world governing bodies.
He is rated as number 3 by the World Boxing Association and the World Boxing Organisation, number 5 by the World Boxing Council and number 13 by the International Boxing Federation. Warren refused to put in an offer for an obligatory defence against Portuguese Antonio Bento claiming that there would hardly any point or any interest in another European clash.
He said this on the matter: “We had a discussion and came to a mutual conclusion that Alex would vacate it. The Portuguese fighter who he was set to meet in his next fight has been beaten by Sinitsin, so we think that the European title has served its purpose.” He concluded by saying: “We will keep our options open but his next fight will probably be down south. We like to take our boxers around the place and build up their profile.” I believe Arthur is a great boxer and he definitely has the potential to become a world champion. He is one of Britain’s boxing talents and I feel he will definitely be able to go onto bigger and better things.
