Floyd Mayweather declared that Carlos Baldomir will be the biggest challenge of his career as he attempts to retrieve the world welterweight title in Vegas.
Argentina’s Baldomir triumphed over Zab Judah for the WBC crown back in January and reserved it by viciously impeding Arturo Gatti back in July, although he goes into the bout as a heavy underdog with a record of 43 bouts, 9 losses, 6 draws and 13 knockouts. Mayweather, who became a four-weight champion when he beat Judah for the IBF belt but gave it up to guarantee a confrontation with Baldomir, said: “I’m in great shape but I know this is my toughest fight so far.”
This is only the third time Mayweather has fought at welterweight and will be the smaller man stepping into the ring. The so-called “Pretty Boy”, who I consider to be the world’s greatest pound-for-pound boxer, is refusing to take him lightly, he said: “Baldomir is a big, big welterweight. He’s solid, with an A-plus chin and he hasn’t lost in nine years.” Both men have been linked with as possible opponents for Manchester’s unbeaten ex-welterweight champion Ricky Hatton. But the American boxing king, Oscar de la Hoya, has pronounced that he wants to meet Mayweather in a “super fight” before he retires next year; which will be a great loss to boxing.
Who do you think will win out of Mayweather and Baldomir? And who do you want to fight Mayweather next: Hatton or de la Hoya? Please leave your own thoughts at the bottom of the page.
