Bernard Hopkins: A Sore Loser?

After losing to Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins has been saying that he thought he won the fight. Are his statements justified or his Hopkins just being a sore loser?

Let us take a look at what Bernard Hopkins has been saying:

Afterwards, Hopkins said: “I controlled the pace like a true veteran. I never got hurt in the fight. I never got hit with any big shots. I have nothing to be ashamed of.”

True, Hopkins doesn’t have anything to be ashamed of. He gave his best and gave Calzaghe a good fight. Nobody is denying this or the fact that Bernard Hopkins will always be considered a true veteran, but that doesn’t mean he won the fight.

“I wanted him to run into my shots, I think I made him do that, and I think I made it look pretty easy. I think I controlled the pace, and I controlled the fight. I think it was an old-school execution. He really wasn’t landing his shots.”

Sorry Bernard but according to the judges Calzaghe landed more shots than you, that’s why he won. Also, this was no “old school execution”. Hopkins did not KO Calzaghe, nor come out as a clear winner after 12 rounds.

“Look at my face, I don’t have a bruise. I busted him up,” Hopkins said. “I took a guy to school who was undefeated.”

Boxing isn’t all about “busting people up”. Its about using your skill and fitness to win the fight, which you didn’t do on Saturday night.

So do you think Hopkins is right? Did he beat Calzaghe?

Or is he being a sore loser?

As great a boxer as Bernard Hopkins may be, he just wasn’t good enough on Saturday night and I think he should just accept that.

What do you think?

  1. The fight was equal, it shoud have been a draw. I think Hopkins lost due to foul play with regards to acting out too many low blows. Hopkins is too old, Calzaghe makes money he is set to make millions over his coming fights.

  2. i thought hopkins did enough to win. maybe Warren got to the judges as he has done before=reid vs calzaghe. it was a sad day for boxing. same as last weeks decision dawson against johnson, i thought that was way off also.

  3. No he’s a SORE WINNER that didn’t get credit. The fight was a draw at best. HOP MAD JOE FIGHT WHAT EVER WAY HE WANTED. AT NO TIME DID CALZAGHE EVER HAVE CONTROL, or hurt the season vet! B-HOP did exactly what he said he would do and that was stopping him from doing ANYTHING, but maybe the low blows which weren’t that bad. There was acting involved. Joe was clearly the dirty fighter of the two. Cleanest fight I have ever seen HOP in. Good on him for not retaliating. Shows character. Funny how everyone thought B-HOP would have been the one throwing low blows. Interesting huh? Anyway it is what it is. “WE” gave him the fight. Calzaghe was clearly given the fight. NOT an excuse, because it should have been at least a draw if not HOP up by one. Hopkins did everything to stop joe from fighting a fight and clearly dominated. Never did Joe look like the Joe in all his other “CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHTS” lol funny huh? He gets in the ring with a VET and looks like the “Average Joe”, with the Americans giving him the WIN. Its all good. It is what it is.

  4. ok maybe the SORE WINNNER was a little overboard. BUT calzaghe was clearly not the WINNER.

  6. It’s pathetic that obviously prejudiced fans can’t accept the fact that Hopkins was out-classed by a better fighter. He’s just not good enough to beat Calzaghe. Or maybe they can’t stand that Hopkins got beat by a White Boy. Wow! Can you imagine what would happen if Calzaghe said something like that about Hopkins? But he has too much class. Or maybe it’s just that he’s not from philladelphia.

  7. It is utterly ridiculous to say Hopkins won. Calzaghe threw way more punches, and landed a greater percentage of them according to the Compubox statistics. More busy, more accurate. Hopkins blatantly cheated in feigning injury from two extremely questionable low-blows. He did spoil Calzaghe’s fight, and showed some good counter-punching - but that is no way enough to give him the fight. He is a racist self-deluded bad loser who should have more dignity at his age.

  8. I think when a fight is that close and you leave it up to the judges, you deserve whatever they rule. If Hopkins was that much better than Calzaghe then he would have KO’d him or at least made it a convincing points victory.

  9. No it’s not ridiculous there little buddy. It was more of a DRAW than anything, and if you were to deduct any points from Joe due to the “intentional” LOW BLOWS it would have defiantly been Hopkins fight. So who was the cleanest and honest fighter that night? Who came in there and knocked a Joe down in the FIRST round? Its funny how your HERO can honestly say “When I hit him there in the second round, that was proper deliberate. He’d knocked me down in the first so I had to give him a dig, didn’t I?” and think that it is ok to think logically that IF im being beaten I will CHEAT. Everyone said HOPKINS CHEATED his way to a defeat. WELL I WANT TO KNOW HOW. Especially when Joe BARLEY wins and talks trash as if he murdered this guy. Hopkins TOOK everything he EVER KNEW about boxing and made him FIGHT what ever way HOPKINS wanted him to fight, and what does he do get FRUSTRATED and HIT LOW…. What a fag. There was another fighter that fought this way. He was a FAG too. Del La Hoya KO’ed that little guy. I think he was Mexican though. O and im not prejudiced. What Hopkins says does not make me prejudice. What he says is ALL hype anyway. ANOTHER WORDS FOR THE ADD PEOPLE HERE. It means MAKE MONEY. HYPE=MONEY. Hopkins was the bad guy to tell the fight. Calzaghe was the DIRTY fighter that night, and A DISGRACE TO BOXING. Especially after a performance like that. Which was NOTHING. He did absolutely nothing. Hopkins made Calzaghe do what ever he wanted. And that was stopping him from DOING ANYTHING but a few SLAPPING here and there. To what, win the fight? i think NOT. DRAW if NOT HOP up by 1 due to Knock down in the 1st round.

  10. WES, you talk a load of sh*t.Hopkins is a racist sore loser who cant accept he was beaten by a white - south paw for the first time.oh and the better boxer.hopkins didnt want to box joe, because he knew he would lose-badly.Instead, he just ran away for 12 rounds.nobody can look good against a fighter who does this, but Joe knew what he had to do to win the fight, and thats what he did

    Comment by IHATEWES — April 25, 2008 @ 1:20 pm

  11. haha nice one there buddy… “Joe knew what he had to do to win the fight” what cheat by hitting low (twice)? lol your a laugh there little one. Joe and his corner didn’t think they won the fight (look at there faces), he knew he didn’t do anything at all. Hop put him on his ass and made him do WHAT EVER he wanted. Yes Joe slapped a million times (who didn’t think he was going to do that). To what, win? lol get a new hero guy. That is no champion. He barley beat an “OLD” legend. I can’t imagine if it were 5 or so years ago. Joe would have gone down EVERY round, easy. It’s Like I said before, SHAME on US for “GIVING” the BRIT the win that night. Yes WE GAVE him the win. Neither of them were impressive, but IT WAS AT BEST A DRAW if not HOP up by ONE. EASY FIGHT TO SCORE. I don’t give fighters the points just for slapping. Just because someone taps you on the shoulder does not mean they struck you. UNLESS YOU’RE IN COURT. Lol SO “IHATEWES”, I don’t talk shit. I just tell it how it is plus some. Calzaghe will never be anything more than a “nobody” that beat a BUNCH of nobodies to win a decision over a LEGEND to become nothing more than a wanna-be GREAT. What’s with this talk about ALI, haha Calzaghe should not even SAY those words. He should not even SPEAK of a REAL LEGEND like Ali. Calzaghe is NO legend, or champion. If anything he’s an ALMOST-champion. He showed up to the game late and only got to play the last few seconds and tries to take credit for the whole thing. Is that all his fault, maybe not. But if he wants to be ANYTHING great, retirement should not be in his vocabulary. He needs REAL FIGHTS with REAL fighters. Just like his last 2. He will need about 10 or so more to be considered anything GREAT.
