A fight has been made by the world boxing council between the top and second top ranked fighters, Andre Berto (top with 21-0, and 18 knock outs ), Miguel Rodriguez (second top with 29-2, and 23 knockouts). To fill the welterweight title vacancy that was made when Floyd Mayweather retired. The two were scheduled to fight on the 21 June as a part of the HBO boxing after dark.

It was anticipated by both that Mayweather would let go of his 147 pound title, due to him having no big plans to defend it before his retirement. He won the title after beating Carlos Baldomir in November of 2006. He has not defended against any ranked contenders, and definitely not the top ranked contender. The WBC has a requirement to defend the title annually, against the top ranked fighter.

Since his defeat of Baldomir, Mayweather has fought against Oscar De La Hoya and also won a fight against Ricky Hatton where he won by a knock-out.

Who do you think the next welterweight champion will be?

Should Mayweather have defended his title more?
