We haven’t done a list of who we consider as the top pound for pound boxers in a while, so here’s the update.
Feel free to agree or disagree, and please post any comments you have on the list at the bottom of the article.
1. Floyd Mayweather
USA (39-0-0, 24KOs)
Whether pretty boy is retired or not, we are still uncluding him in this list and he is still number one. A truly skilled and talented boxer, Mayweather beat Brit Ricky Hatton fair and square to maintain he number one position. We think Floyd Mayweather will go down in history and one of the greatest boxers ever.
2. Manny Pacquiao
Philippines (46-3-2, 35KOs)
Still non-stop action, the Pacman gets number two. Its a shame that he and Floyd aren’t more similar weights, as a match up between them would truly be an awesome fight. Pacquiao beat Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez in March to claim the WBC super-featherweight crown and faces WBC lightweight champion David Diaz in June, we think it will be another win for Pacman there.
3. Miguel Cotto
Puerto Rico (32-0, 26KOs)
The former light-welterweight world champion and current WBA welterweight title-holder Cotto absolutely smashed Alfonso Gomez and will now face IBF title-holder Antonio Margarito in July. Cotto is still undefeated and looking good in the ring, perhaps a match up with Floyd Mayweather could be in the not too distant future.
4. Juan Manuel Marquez
Mexico (48-4-1, 35KOs)
Despite losing his WBC super-featherweight title in a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, this guy is still a terrific boxer and deserves the number four spot.
5. Joe Calzaghe
Wales (45-0, 32KOs)
Although we give Calzaghe credit for outpointing Bernard Hopkins, he did not demolish the vetran and Calzaghe hasn’t beaten top boxers at their prime. Next up looks to be Roy Jones for a big money fight, but a win against him wont move him much higher in our rankings.
6. Israel Vazquez
Mexico (43-4, 31KOs)
Israel Vazquez won back his WBC belt from Rafael Marquez last August and this is solid boxer, with an even more solid left hook, who gets the number 6 spot.
7. Winky Wright
United States (51-4-1, 25KOs)
A unanimous decision loss to Bernard Hopkins in July was Wright’s first loss in seven years, but he is still a great boxer and has more to offer the sport.
8. Kelly Pavlik
United States (33-0, 29KOs)
Pavlik has shot up in our rankings after winning the undisputed middleweight crown from Jermain Taylor last year and defends his title against Gary Lockett in Atlantic City in June. We could see big things from this guy.
9. Antonio Margarito
Mexico (36-5, 26KOs)
After his demolition of Kermit Cintron in April, Margarito now faces Miguel Cotto, in a welterweight unification showdown this July.
10. Ricky Hatton - Light-welterweight
England (43-1, 31KOs)
Hatton was fairly beaten by Floyd Mayweather in December so just makes our Top Ten. However this Hitman is returning to the ring against Juan Lazcano in Manchester this May, so the fireworks haven’t stopped yet!
