Boxing fans all over Britain are mourning the death of one of its young potential talents; Gary Barker.
Barker, who was laid to rest on Monday in Barnet, was killed in a car crash near Luton on the 10th of December. He was one of Britain’s key boxing hopes for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. 19-year-old Barker won the lightweight London Amateur Boxing Association title in October and boxed for the well-known Repton Boxing Club in London’s East End.
He had already represented England and Great Britain in numerous international competitions and was the gold medallist at the junior Olympics in 2002; and he also won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2004 and the National Junior Amateur Boxing Association lightweight crown a year later. He was born in Barnet and came from a boxing family and his brother, Darren Barker, won the gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games that were held in Manchester. Unfortunately Barker tragically died from a large number of wounds last week after his car hit crash barriers on the M1 and rolled over.
This is a complete and utter heartbreak and my condolences go out to all of his friends and family.
