Boxing to get the most Olympic Medals

Since the heroic performance of Amir Khan, amateur boxing has been given a big boost, should it be included in schools?

Amateur Boxing Association of England boss Paul King says that he believes that amateur boxing is “on the up” and should get Britain more Olympic medals than swimming and athletics.

According to King, amateur boxing has never been as good in terms of participation, funding and global success.

King said: “We were the only sport to exceed expectations and beat the Aussies at the Commonwealths, we knock spots off athletics and swimming. I bet we win more medals in Beijing than they do combined.”

King said that the reason for this upswing in fortunes was probably Amir Khan’s silver medal at the Athens Olympics but says none of the advances would have been possible if the governing body had not raised its game as well.

He said this at a launch of a campaign to try and get boxing back into schools. It has been 50 years since boxing was removed from PE due to safety concerns.

I would have loved if at least some boxing was taught in schools. However I don’t think that all kids are suited to it (not all are even suited to the slightest physical activity) and so I think that it should be made optional with children either doing a lesson on fitness or one on boxing.

All this stuff about safety concerns is quite frankly a load of BS. Sports like rugby are much more dangerous, particularly as rugby has little or no safety precautions. In amateur boxing, both boxers have head guards and a referee who can stop the fight at any time. Both coaches can stop the fight at any time as well.

I think it would be good as it would get kids a lot fitter than they are now and it would teach them self discipline and a bit of self defence!

Also another great reason to do this is that it will get more kids interested in boxing and therefore more may join boxing clubs. This may lead to more boxing champions from Britain as more kids are taking up the sport.

What do you think about boxing in schools?

And what bout our boxing chances in Beijing 2008?

Got an opinion…express it below….
