British Super Featherweight champion, Carl Johanneson is set to defend his title against Ricky Burns.
This is shaping up to be a classic encounter in today’s British boxing ranks as these two top fighters go toe to toe on Johanneson’s home turf in Leeds on Friday.
European champion, Alex Arthur, was taken the distance by Ricky Burns last year and from what I saw of that fight, Burns is a fairly tall, rangy boxer. That loss on points to Arthur is Burns’ only defeat in his career of sixteen professional bouts.
On the other had Johanneson is is powerful fighter who heaps pressure on his opponents and this has enabled him to stop 18 out of 27 opponents inside the distance.
At the moment, the super featherweight division is probably the best in British boxing as there is so much British boxing talent around.
Johanneson and Burns aside, we still have Scot Arthur who wants a shot at the world title whilst Dagenham’s Kevin Mitchell is the Commonwealth title holder.
