Calzaghe has the choice: Roy Jones or Antonio Tarver?

Since Calzaghe beat Hopkins in a split decision, everyday seems to bring a new fighter out of the woodwork who wants to face the Welshman.

First to put his name forward was Roy Jones and now Antonio Tarver has said he wants to fight Calzaghe.

Just shows what beating a high profile yank can do for your career!

Firstly let me make it clear that these are not “new” fighters, they are old ones being tried again. Boxing seems to produce more “comebacks” than any other sport and Tarver and Jones are another two once great fighters that are attempting the classic comeback routine.

Tarver beat Briton Clinton Woods earlier this month, wants Calzaghe next and he said:

“Everyone was mentioned as Calzaghe’s potential next opponent but me, the true light-heavyweight world champion,”

“I will fight him in the US, in the UK or wherever he wants to fight on my way to unifying the belts this year.”

Both Jones and Tarver are past their best, remember Tarver was the guy who ended the career of the pound for pound king Roy Jones all those years ago…

Out of these two I think Roy Jones is the more likely choice because I think he has more of a reputation and name in the boxing world than Tarver and therefore could probably attract more money to the fight. Also remember that Tarver lost to Hopkins, and Joe Calzaghe has just beat Hopkins, so it does not make much sense for Tarver and Calzaghe to fight.

Who do you think Calzaghe should fight next?

Are either of these boxers right for Calzaghe?

  1. Out of them two, it would be Jones. Tarver was a one time champ. Jones is pretty much done. Tarver would get made fun off if he were to fight Calzaghe. He would get slapped to many times to actually fight Joe. Jones is finished but IS STILL FASTER than calzaghe and I believe calzaghe doesn’t hit hard enough to knock out Glass the jawed Roy Jones. If anything Roy would tire after 6 and Calzaghe would probably hit low a few times just because and Win a 12 rounder again. That’s just me. Roy would have to KO him early to win.

  2. I have a question. Say Jones and Calzaghe fight. Let’s say Jones KO’s Calzaghe. (I know all the calzaghe lovers are bitching up a storm and crying like the fags that they are at this point) But let’s say Jones KO’s Calzaghe. (Only way I predict Jones winning, unless he knocks him down every other round and wins by pts. But if that doesn’t happen then Calzaghe will win due to slapping every round and winning like a bitch again) anyway SAY JONES wins.

Would anyone want to see a rematch of Jones and Hopkins? OR Is everyone waiting for Hopkins to retire?

If so, how about Jones VS Taylor or Pavlik or is just everyone tired of the return (ONCE AGAIN) of Jones?

Anyway I’m just curious. I could see Jones beating calzaghe inside 6 due to speed and power. If it goes 1 second past round 6, Jones will tire and dance along the ropes probably laughing his ass off and asking for Joe to keep bringing that weak shit (hopefully the ref wouldn’t stop the fight like in the Manfredo fight, homeboy was laughing at calzaghe and his so called power up until the ref stopped it). Joe would win with pts if Jones did that.

But I could see Jones winning and if he does, I would want him to fight a PRIME but young Pavlik or Taylor or even Kessler. But then again I can see him calling out Tarver or Johnson and revenge what ENDED his career. I’m just curious to what people would want Jones to do “IF” the fight were to happen and he were to WIN.

Again I give Jones a 50-50 chance against Joe do to SPEED and POWER even at his age. Joe’s ONLY, I say again “ONLY” thing he would have better than Jones is YOUTH, and ENDURANCE. Everything else belongs to the TRUE “OLD” Legend/Champ Roy Jones JR. What is everyone’s thoughts?

  3. Yes joe calzaghe has made a great choice in selecting roy jones jr. One reason is its the publicity and fans this wil attract, jones is easily one of the most entertaining fighters ever, not because of his unbridled cockiness, its his simple talent when you see a fighter like him that can maintain the speed with accuracy its just mindblowing yes i am a roy jones jr fan but its because of his punching talents, jones has larry holmes sniper like punches, hees got muhammad alis loveable quirky attitude, jones has mike tysons unnatural ability for movement and dodging those flurries and yes he has the freak like strength of ken norton, yes i may be raving jones alot but there are better fighters out there than him im just merely saying that joe calzaghe has chosen well good luck to both of these fighters this shall be one hell of a fight
