Can Danny Williams be proud of his career?

Danny Williams has been saying that he might retire on this “high” after beating Scott Gammer to win back the British Heavyweight title.

He said something like this would be a good time to retire as a two time British Champion who beat Mike Tyson, but is this really something to be that proud of….

To be honest, Danny Williams has had a average career.

Sure he has won the British title, but the heavyweight ranks are a bit of a shambles at the moment and so although that is a good achievement, it does not have as much value as it would have had, if there has been better boxers in the ranks.

I think that way too much was made of Williams beating Mike Tyson. All this media hype about “the man who knocked out Mike Tyson” is rubbish. Tyson had been knocked out and beaten a fair few times before Williams beat him, and he was knocked out afterwards as well. So there really is nothing to rave about. James Douglas, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis can perhaps be proud of knocking out Mike Tyson, but Tyson was past his peak even when he fought Lewis, and he was certainly well past his peak when Williams beat him.

Williams Vs. Tyson

This recent “high” of winning back the British Heavyweight boxing title from Scott Gammer is not really a peak to go out on. Scott Gammer in my opinion is poor boxer. He has fought a bunch of nobodies and part timers that gave he that “undefeated” record and the British title. When he had the title he was whining like a girl about how he was getting the recognition for his “achievements”. Look, even the world champion in the heavyweight division aren’t getting much recognition at the moment because to division is so dire! And yet Scott Gammer expected the British boxing fans to kiss his feet, when he has got any of the many available world titles, has not fought anyone worth noting and is not even one of the best boxers in the country in the diabolical heavyweight class?! Winning the British title does NOT mean that you are the best boxer in Britain. Winning the title means that you won the title. That’s it. There are quite clearly a fair number of British Heavyweights that are much better than Gammer; Skelton, Sprott, Williams to name just a few.

On top of the Gammer then took the “easy” option he choosing to fight Williams instead of Harrison, when Harrison has just demolished Williams. How can you expect respect when you dodge harder fights and take easy ones? Not only take the easier fighters, but then LOSE to the easier fighters is just shameful. Scott Gammer deserves absolutely no recognition for his boxing career so far.

Therefore, this is not such a huge win for Danny Williams. Yes, he has got back the belt, but both Skelton and Sprott would probably be favoured above him, perhaps even Harrison would be as well!

Having said all that, if Danny Williams has given boxing his best then you cannot knock him. If he feels that he has given all that he can to the sport then I fully respect and support his decsion to retire. If he has done his best than he can be proud of himself, even if he does not go down in history as one of the great boxers.

What do you think?

Can Danny Williams be proud of his boxing career?

  2. Danny Williams has become somewhat of a British Cult Hero.

He has had some exciting fights in his career. IMO, Dannys Charm, Charisma and Charachter will be missed when he retires, and not only British Boxing, but Boxing in general will be lose a true Fighter.

  3. Scott Gammer put up an excellent fight against Williams and has every right to be proud of himself just as Pembokeshire is proud of him. Having gone to school with Gammer for 5 years the comment saying “he expected British boxing fans to kiss his feet” is the biggest lie going. Gammer is a true fighter who does deserve respect and recognition!!
