37-year-old WBA light heavyweight world champion Fabrice Tiozzo has announced that he is calling it a day. The Frenchman, who has held onto his title for nearly two years, was meant to defend his belt against Argentinean Hugo Gernon Garay on the 18th of November.
Even though he has had great successes and talent he has decided to pull out of the bout. On the subject he said: “I’m retiring at the top. At my age, with my prizes, I need challenges and they won’t offer me them anymore.” Tiozzo has a record of 50 bouts of which he won 48 and lost two.
Both of his losses came in opposition to WBA cruiserweight champion Virgil Hill. I think it is good that Tiozzo is retiring near to his peak and will not go out on a low like so many great champions have like Ali, Tyson, Moore and many more. So although he was a decent fighter and I would rather have him back in the ring it is the right decision.
