Miguel Cotto managed to stop fellow Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana in Atlantic City during the fifth round to take hold of the vacant WBA welterweight crown.
The WBA belt was given up by Manchester’s Ricky Hatton earlier this year. Cotto put Quintana onto the canvas twice in round the fifth round and managed to bloody his opponent before he was stopped from coming out of his corner for round number six. It was the ex-WBO light welterweight legend’s first fight at 147lb and he was able to improve his unblemished record even more to 28 wins, 23 knockouts and still with no defeats.
Cotto was coming up to the division after six consecutive defences of his light welterweight title that he retained back in 2004 and has still managed to carry his power and speed up with him to the higher weight. Cotto came out flying from the opening bell and ruthlessly beat Quintana, who entered the bout with an impressive record of 23-0 with 18 knockouts.
After the fight Cotto said: “I felt very strong at this weight and every punch I throw is hard. I felt I could do anything I wanted to do.” I believe that if Cotto keeps up this impressive form he will be able to become the best pound-for-pound boxer around.
