Scott Gammer was knocked out in the 9th round by Danny Williams as he recaptured his British Heavyweight title.
Although I think Gammer began quite well, Danny Williams was showing a lot more class in the middle rounds. In the seventh round Gammer was pretty shook up when he received a big right from Williams. Williams had lost a lot of weight for this fight, and his leaner shape helped him in this fight I think, as he looked a lot better than he has in previous fights where he has come in weighing much more.
The only time that Gammer looked like he might have won was when he gave two very strong left hooks to Williams in the eighth round. However Williams won with a massive right hand in the following round. Although Gammer just managed to struggle to his feet on the count of ten, the referee called the bout off. This was a wise decision as if he has let Scott Gammer carry on, Williams would have knocked him out again within a short time and there is a chance that Gammer would have got seriously hurt, and nobody wants that.
I think that what helped Williams the most in this fight was his weight. He shrunk himself to 16st and 4lb which is the lightest he has been since his professional boxing debut more than a decade ago. This leaner version of Williams looked much more comfortable and agile that the version that lost to Matt Skelton and Audley Harrison, which was 4st heavier.
After the fight, even though Williams has regained the Lonsdale title, he suggested that this fight may be his last.
It was a very satisfying victory - I proved everybody wrong,” said Williams.
“But my performance was not that great. I’ll go home and analyse the tape and if I think there is not much more I can do, that’s it for Danny Williams.
“In a few days I’ll make up my mind see if there is much left I can do and if not, I’m off.”
Williams, who defeated Mike Tyson in 2004, also revealed he had trained himself for the fight
“I trained myself. Joey Dunbar gave me a programme on a piece of paper. But I’ve done all the training myself.”
Joey Dunbar used to be Lennox Lewis’ conditioner.
What did you think of the Gammer-Williams fight?
What does the future hold for Danny Williams?
These are some ideas I had about what Danny Williams could go on to do in boxing:
Firstly, he could fight Harrison again. The pair have met twice and both have won a fight each. The third fight would be the decider. Secondly, he could try for a fight with the loser of the Skelton-Sprott fight. Ideally he would obviously like to take on the winner, but the winner of that fight will want a shot at a world title. Thirdly, he could then take on the winner of the Skelton-Sprott fight, but this might be a harder match for him to get if either Skelton or Sprott win a world title. After that he may just have one last chance to challenge for a world title, but this is a fair few fights away. If he loses in any of the fights I mentioned above, he should just retire there and then. However if Danny Williams feels that he has given all that he has to offer then every boxing fan would understand if he decided to retire right now.
What do you think?
