The Mayweather-De La Hoya rematch on the 20 September was cancelled when Mayweather announced his retirement. The effects of this fight cancellation means that De La Hoya will only be fighting once more before retiring himself. De La Hoya has apparently given up his September date and will now have his final fight on the 6th December on HBO PPV in either Las Vegas, or Los Angeles. Schaefer said “This will be Oscar’s career finale, and we want to make it a big, big event”.
De La Hoya originally had three fight dates in 2008, he defeated Steve Forbes last month and was going to rematch Mayweather in September before retiring after his December fight. The opponent has not yet been decided for this December finale. Schaefer said it could be the welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, if he wins his fight against Antonio Margarito in July. It seems that it will not be the junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton.
There has been a discussion about Hatton paying Malignaggi. But it seems that the already signed fight will go ahead. Hatton has refused to step aside from his Malignaggi fight to match De La Hoya, after defeating Antonio Margarito on the 24th may. This Hatton-Malignaggi fight will be shown on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing”, and will be taking place on either 15th or 22nd of November, in either New York or Las Vegas.
Who will De la Hoya fight next?
What will the result of the Hatton – Malignaggi fight be?

This is just me, BUT maybe, just maybe Mayweather is stepping a side from boxing/cotto and letting Del La Hoya fight him and then maybe Mayweather will return fighting the winner. Maybe im just hoping that Money May will return.
