Finally a fight between Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather will happen; according to reports it will be next May. 33-year-old De la Hoya told the media that the contest is set to be on the 5th of May next year and that it was a “done deal”.
Mayweather, who won the WBC welterweight belt at the beginning of this month month, will gain enough weight to become light middleweight for his “last fight”. It will definitely be a worthwhile payday for the 29-year-old against De la Hoya, who has won ten different titles in six different divisions; but has not been in the ring since May.
It is expected that De la Hoya will get £13m and Mayweather will get £5.25, and the bout is likely to take place in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles. Olympic gold medallist De la Hoya was last in the ring last May when he beat Ricardo Miyorga to clinch the WBC light middleweight crown in an absolutely class display of boxing in Las Vegas. The American Mayweather remains unbeaten in 37 professional contests and after beating Baldomir in Vegas recently he said that his next bout would be his last.
De la Hoya is trained by Mayweather’s separated father and said he would appreciate the fact that Floyd senior may feel too uncomfortable to be in his corner. He said this on the matter: “I will sit down and talk about this; I want us both to be comfortable with the situation. But I am prepared if he says no to me. I am prepared to move on and get somebody else.” This bout should be an amazing spectacle and I cannot wait for it to happen. I honestly can’t say who I think will win so it looks like we will just have to wait and see.

A very interesting bout, too close to call, really could go either way, but what a great way for De la Hoya to go out of boxing.

The only way to beat Mayweather is to pressure him hard. I don’t think De La Hoya will be able to do that. Floyd will stay on the outside and box his way to a unanimous decision.

Mayweather will not win by way of knockout but he does have a very good chance. Both are experienced boxers who are great at the sport so it’s a tough one to judge. I can’t wait though!!!
