Embarrassing Holyfield Beats Oquendo

On Friday night Evander Holyfield continued his mission for a record fifth world heavyweight title by beating Fres Oquendo in a “warm-up” bout in Texas.

Embarrassing Holyfield Beats Oquendo

The 44-year-old crusader put Oquendo onto the canvas in the first round but the pace of the bout soon decreased and Holyfield was awarded a unanimous points decision at the end of what can only be called a very boring bout. The American legend is now targeting a world title shot in 2007 saying: “My goal is to be champion again. I feel good and I’m going for a fifth. When I achieve that I will retire.”

But when will this guy ever hang up his gloves and leave boxing alone. This is almost definitely affecting his health and if he doesn’t want to end up like Jake Lamotta and Muhammad Ali I would suggest that he gives up right now.

Please leave your thoughts and comments at the bottom of the page on Evander’s lame attempt to become champ again at the bottom of the page.

  1. holyfield is a champion and always will be. in his own words, he is “not a quitter”

i think he could become world champ again, mainly because of his pure boxing abilty but also as there is no serious heavyweights around today!

  2. I agree that he was a good fighter back in his day and I do agree that there are no quality heavyweights around today. I also do NOT mean to slag off Holyfield because he did some great things in the ring but I just fear that he’ll seriously damage his mental and physical health; which I’m sure no one wants to see. Do you not agree?
As much as I would love to see him reach his goal I just feel it will come at too much of a cost because I do not believe he has the ability anymore to do so.

  3. Evander has absolutely nothing left to prove inside the boxing ring. He’s done it all and came out the other end smiling. Let’s remember him like that and not like a hasbeen trying to recapture his youth. You are a CHAMPION, don’t do this to yourself.
