Pound of pound boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr has announced that he is retiring from boxing.
Mayweather is stepping down undefeated, after winning all of his 39 fights, and therefore his last fight was against Rick Hatton when he retained his WBC welterweight title.
Floyd Mayweather said:
“This decision was not an easy one for me to make, because boxing is all I have done since I was a child,”
This announcement ends speculation that “Pretty Boy” Mayweather would have rematch fights with Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya.
Floyd Mayweather tried a bit of wrestling earlier this year and it is clear that he has lost his huger for boxing glory.
“These past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport,”
“I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner (the proposed De La Hoya fight).”
“But there comes a time when money doesn’t matter. I just can’t do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.”
I know there will be many Mayweather boxing fans that will be sad to see him go, and also Hatton and De La Hoya fans which will be angry that we will see no rematches. However I think this is the best decision for Mayweather and all boxing fans should be grateful for what this truly outstanding boxer has done for the sport.
What do you think of Mayweather’s decision to retire?
Has he had a great career?
