Johnny Williams, the former British and Empire Heavyweight boxing champion has died at age 80.
Born in Barmouth, Wales, on Christmas Day 1926, Williams turned into a professional boxer in 1946.
One thing that stands out from his boxing career was the way that he made boxing into a science, a lot more so than many other boxers at the time as Williams favoured “brain over brawn”
He retired from professional boxing in 1960 with a over 60 victories under his belt and 38 KO’s as well as 4 draws and only eleven losses.
His greatest boxing fight was probably the one against Jack Gardner on 17 July, 1950, in Leicester. However Williams lost the Commonwealth title eliminator in that fight on points. It is rated as one of the most gruelling boxing fights in British history and after the fight both of the boxers were forced to spend the night in hospital.
But Williams’ finest hour came when he got revenge over Gardner in a 15 round showdown in 1952 and so seized both the British and Empire titles!
After leaving boxing, he found a new life farming with his wife and daughter.
