Former champion Klitschko to make comeback

Vitali Klitschko, the former world heavyweight boxing champion in planning to make a comeback to boxing in April.

He said in a statement today, “I am returning to get my WBC (World Boxing Council) championship back

“In November 2005, due to a serious knee injury, I retired without having lost the WBC belt in the ring.

“At the WBC gala on December 20, 2005 in Cancun, Mexico, the WBC designated me as “WBC Champion Emeritus” and assured me that whenever I was ready to return, I would become the immediate mandatory challenger for the title.”

Vitali Klitschko plans to make his return against the current holder Oleg Maskaev from Russia on April the 21 in Moscow.

“I’m back and I have requested the WBC sanction a bout between me and Oleg Maskaev,” he said.

“I look forward to reclaiming my title and want to thank everyone who has been so supportive during my short retirement.”

This fight will be Klitschko’s first time back inside the boxing ring since his eighth round knock-out victory over the British Danny Williams in December 2004.

When he temporarily retired, Vitali Klitschko ran for mayor of Kiev and although he lost he continues to play an active role in Ukrainian politics.

Vladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko’s brother is et to make a defence of his IBF and IBO heavyweight titles against the America Ray Austin on March 10.

“I look forward to seeing us all together soon and I am also excited about having the opportunity to fulfil the dreams of the Klitschko brothers being heavyweight champions at the same time,” Vitali said.

    The WBC, upon Klitschko retiring the Championship
    title, publicly announced that if he decided to continue
    his career, he would receive an immediate opportunity
    to fight for the title against whoever held the WBC
    Heavyweight Championship at that time. Please sign
