Britain’s David Haye kept hold of his European cruiserweight title and set up a possible WBC championship bout when he stopped Giacobbe Fragomeni.
37-year-old Fragomeni seemed to be on the path for a victory after cutting Haye in round number six at London’s York Hall. However a wounded Haye radically broke down the Italian’s defences in the ninth round and ultimately floored him with the use of a quick outbreak of punches.
The great Briton now looks to take on WBC legend O’Neil Bell some time next year. Haye had waited seven years for the chance to beat Fragomeni, who controversially beat him as an amateur in the Sydney Games. Haye said this after the bout: “It was the type of fight I needed . . . its fights like this you need from time to time.” He continued by saying: “I will be straight back in the gym. There are a couple of flaws I need to sort out, but I will be back in the New Year and look forward to my world title fight. I knew he was going to be a really tough opponent - and he was.” At last England is finally churning out some decent fighters.

I thought he looked very skillfull but lacked the power to take out the bigger guys and that could be his downfall when he decides to step up to the heavy weights, but a very impressive boxer.

I totally agree. I don’t think he will ever really improve as he has sort of already peaked. But there is no denying that he does have talent and the ability to do very well in the heavyweight devision.
