In “The Sun” newspaper, boxing promoter Frank Warren announced that he has negotiated terms with Don King for Samuel Peter, the WBC Heavyweight Champion, to defend his title in the UK.
Samuel Peter is somewhat of a shining light of hope in the currently dull heavyweight division. It looks like Peter will fight either Audley Harrison or Matt Skelton at the O2 arena on 12th July. Harrison has lost 3 of his last 6 fights, including one to Skelton, but he has just beat Jason Barnett in a fifth round stoppage on the Calzaghe – Hopkins undercard in Las Vegas. Skelton on the other hand, got a shot at the WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev in January but unfortunately he lost a unanimous decision over twelve rounds to the champion in Germany.
Would you like to see Samuel Peter fight Harrison or Skelton?
Another possible sign of life in the heavyweight division is David Haye, who just moved up from cruiserweight. I don’t want to see Haye fight for a heavyweight title just yet, but in another fight or so and I think he could be a contender for Peter’s WBC crown or one of the other titles.
However for now we will focus on the upcoming Harrison/Skelton – Peters match up. Actually I think its a sign of how much the heavyweight division is lacking in talent that boxers such as Harrison and Skelton are getting yet another title shot.
What do you think?
