Carl Johanneson managed to hold onto his British super-featherweight championship after he stopped his obstinate challenger Femi Fehintola during the sixth round in Barnsley. 24-year-old, Fehintola, who is from Bradford, was knocked down four times before the bout was permanently stopped.
Johanneson, who is from Leeds, first won the title when he stopped Billy Corcoran in the fourth round in July. And it was quite clear that Johanneson had it very easy and it was clear that his single power punches proved too much for his Fehintola to handle. He said after his fight: “I feel there are still loads of improvement in me. Femi came to fight and made it hard but once I got over my initial nerves I felt great and when I really started flowing I stopped him.”
He carried on by saying: “You have not seen anything like my full potential yet. I would like to win the Lonsdale Belt outright then go on to bigger things.” Fehintola started off well but first hit the canvas from a sharp left hook to the temple in the third round, he went down again in the same round after a stomach shot but claimed it was a low blow. Once he got back to his feet he recovered his balance but then received severe punishment in the sixth round; where the referee had to step in. Johanneson has now won seven consecutive bouts since getting knocked out in the first round by Leva Kirakosyan back in December of 2004.
