The Italian Simone Maludrotto beat Belfast boxer Damaen Kelly for the second time this year as he safeguarded his European bantamweight title. The fight, which was held in Sardinia, was stopped in the third round when Kelly’s corner threw in the towel to end the fight.
Kelly had started the bout well but a sharp right hand during the third round left him staggering and, as Maludrottu threw more punches, Kelly’s team decided it was time to step in and save their man. Back in April, Kelly went the distance with Maludrotto; who won on points.
Kelly was unlucky not to have been given Maludrotto’s bantamweight crown at that attempt in Belfast as he had out-boxed the Italian for most of the competition. The Belfast boxer was hoping to become the first Irishman to win European titles at two different weights but unfortunately for him and his country his was unsuccessful. So hopefully these two will meet for a third time and Kelly will be able to take revenge.
