In his first defence of the WBO and WBC world middleweight titles, Kelly Pavlik demolished underdog Gary Lockett in under three rounds in Atlantic City, NJ, USA.
The two boxers were clearly in different classes as it was all one way traffic from the up and coming American star, Kelly Pavlik.
Enzo Calzaghe, Lockett’s trainer, wisely threw in the towel after his boxer was knocked down in the third, the fourth knockdown of the fight.
Who knows whats next for Lockett after this, but Kelly Pavlik has his eyes on super middleweight king Joe Calzaghe, with a possible fight between the pair on October 18.
“Joe Calzaghe would be a great fight for me,” said Pavlik, and there’s no doubting that boxing fans would like to see the pair fight, as Frank Warren acknowledged.
“It would be a great fight for Joe,” but Warren added. “But it’s up to Joe, not Kelly Pavlik, whether the fight will happen.”
Kelly Pavlik is not the only boxer on the cards for Calzaghe, with Roy Jones Junior among the contenders for a shot at the undefeated champion.
Who would you like to see Pavlik fight next?
Should he fight Calzaghe?
Although this fight was a good, solid victory for Pavlik, Lockett was the underdog from the start, so its not like Pavlik has beaten a great boxer. Lockett was knocked down in the first round with a right left combination from the American and then sent to the ground twice in the second. A further knockdown in the third was too much and so Enzo Calzaghe was right to throw in the towel, nobody wants to see any boxer get unnecessarily damaged.
What did you think of the fight?
