IBF heavyweight champion of the world, Wladimir Klitschko will make his first defence against American Calvin Brock on the 11th of November in New York. Recently, there had been rumours of a unification fight with Oleg Maskaev, who took the WBC title from Hasim Rahman last month.
But instead of this, the unbeaten Brock, 31, has at long last been given the prospect of winning a world title. He has had 29 bouts, winning 22, even though he has never stepped into the ring with a former world champion. “Calvin Brock is a very difficult opponent as his pro results and amateur career proves,” said the 30 year old Klitschko, who beat Chris Byrd in a seventh round stoppage to win the IBF belt last April. “I know he is a dangerous opponent and I will not under-estimate him.”
Ukrainian Klitschko, a former WBO champion himself, has 46 wins from 49 fights, of which 41 went the distance. Current WBO heavyweight champion Serguei Lyakhovich has ridiculed Klitschko’s choice of challenger. Lyakhovich, also after a bout with Klitschko, stated: “I knocked Brock out in sparring five years ago. I want to unify the world titles. I don’t know what Klitschko wants.”
Can the big Ukrainian pull it out of the bag? I have to be honest with you; I’m a bit doubtful. What are your views on the matter? Please leave them at the bottom of the page.
