WBO world heavyweight champion Serguei Lyakhovich weighed in 30lbs lighter than Shannon Briggs ahead of their heavyweight clash on Saturday night in Phoenix. Briggs, who is currently 35, believes that he can easily overpower the Belarussian champion who currently lives in Arizona and said: “I’m looking to get him out of there early, he’s a young kid - one or two rounds.”
But Lyakhovich, 30, has bitten back and warned: “I know he’s going to come out swinging, but every time he swings he’s going to get hit.”
‘White Wolf’, as Lyakhovich is known, is making his first defence of his WBO title in his home city. Their fight is the main contest in a nine-bout card and is only one of three title bouts that are being fought. Fernando Angulo of Venezuela is also fighting Houston’s Juan ‘Baby Bull’ Diaz for his WBA lightweight titleAs well as Nicaraguan Luis Perez who will be defending his IBF junior bantamweight championship title against Mexico’s Ricardo Vargas. So all-in-all it should be a great evening for boxing that I as well as many other boxing fans will be looking forward to.
