The current super featherweight commonwealth boxing champion, Kevin Mitchell, will be defending his title against South Africa’s Harry Ramogoadi at Liverpool Olympia on Saturday.
22 year old Mitchell won the vacant belt from George Ashie of Ghana last October and he is still undefeated in 22 professional fights.
On the same boxing card, Derry Matthews is defending his WBU featherweight title against the current British boxing champion, John Simpson. Also, Souleymane M’Baye of France defends his WBA light welterweight crown against Russian Andreas Kotelnik.
Ramogoadi has lost 6 and drawn 2 of his 25 professional boxing bouts and he managed to go the full eight rounds with the former European Champion Nicky Cook in December.
The 23-year-old Matthews, a former outstanding amateur, came to prominence in October with a stunning performance to beat Stephen Foster on points in Manchester.
Matthews said: “Simpson is a tall, strong fighter who has everything to gain from this fight but I have coped well with the pressure of topping a bill in my home town.”
French M’Baye, aged 31, claimed the WBA title, a belt that used to belong to Ricky Hattons, with a fourth-round stoppage of Raul Horacio Balbi last September.
There should be some good fights on this card, but I do not think that it will be as good as it looks on paper. There are a few world titles in the mix, but no world class fighters. For example, M’Baye may hold a world light welterweight boxing title, but he is not the best in the world at that weight class, which includes Hatton, Witter, and Mayweather.
This is another case of boxers having world titles but not being world class.
What do you think?
