Former ABA champion, Kevin Mitchell won the Commonwealth super featherweight title on Saturday evening with a well-deserved points triumph over Ghana’s tough George Ashie at London’s York Hall. It was the ABA featherweight victor’s 22nd win after he turned professional.
Although he lost Ashie took the skilled Englishman the distance for the only seventh time, but on the matter Mitchell said: “I was trying to box more so that when the time comes to move up and fight better guys, I know I can go the distance. If you go bang, crash, and wallop and knock them over, you don’t learn anything. I still lose my focus a bit and go in to have a fight but I’m getting better at that.”
The win means Mitchell, 22, remains on course for a fight against the budding talent Amir Khan but promoter Frank Warren is adamant that it is some time in the future. Here are his words: “There’s a little way to go and some more learning to be done. Kevin and Amir Khan would be a massive fight down the road if they stay at the same weight.” Mitchell’s next fight will be on Warren’s show at London’s ExCel Arena on the 9th of December later on this year.
If Kahn and Mitchell did get it on in the near future it would be a great, close fight; Kahn has the power and speed and Mitchell has the experience.
Please leave your thoughts on Saturday’s clash as well as the potential fight.
