Pavlik Looking Past Lockett to Calzaghe

Pavlik Looking Past Lockett to Calzaghe
This Saturday the World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik is defending his title against Gary Lockett, but the up and coming boxer is already looking past this fight to bigger things.

Apparently, talks are already under way for Kelly Pavlik to fight Joe Calzaghe in November so Kelly Pavlik is viewing Lockett as a warm up before the real fight against the undefeated Calzaghe.

Bob Arum, Kelly Pavlik’s promoter from Top Rank, has said that he is already talked to Frank Warren, Calzaghe’s promoter, about the possibility of a Calzaghe – Pavlik match up.

There are rumours that the Roy Jones – Calzaghe fight is experiencing some trouble over monetary issues, so if they are not resolved, we could could see Pavlik moving up to super middleweight to face the Welshman. Pavlik’s trainer, Loew, says this would be the only motivation for Pavlik to move up a weight division:

“That’s the only reason we’d go, to fight Joe Calzaghe,”

“That would be a huge, huge event.”

“We’re not going to move up to super-middleweight to fight Humpty Dumpty.”

When discussing the shortage of high profile names at this weight level, Loew joked:

“Maybe we’ll beat Joe Calzaghe twice and make enough money that we’ll never have to fight again.”

Personally I think Pavlik should be fully focused on his next fight, against Lockett, even if he views it as a trivial affair. There have been many boxers that have lost sight of the importance of winning their next fight because they are targeting high profile opponents. The most recently example I can think of is Junior Witter, who lost to Bradley whilst pursuing Ricky Hatton.

Plus, a Pavlik – Calzaghe fight would still come second to a Roy Jones match up, so that fight would have to fall through before anything could happen.

Who do you think Joe Calzaghe should fight?

I think he should take the Roy Jones fight, then consider perhaps one more fight against someone like Pavlik, or even just one more big money fight against a easy opponent.

Do you think Pavlik will get to fight Calzaghe?

  3. FAG BOY will loose to OLD MAN JONES JR and just be stright up OUT BOXED, OUT PUNCHED and just stright up KO’ed by the 3rd round if he stepped in the ring with Pavlik. Calzaghe has no one else to fight. He will loose IF he fights again.
