The new year started with a bit of a bang as Samuel Peter comfortably defeated James Toney in a elimination bout for the WBC Heavyweight boxing title.
This win means that Peter is one step closer to getting a fight with the current WBC heavyweight boxing champion, Oleg Maskaev.
Peter won the fight after twelve rounds by an unanimous decision and he looked very comfortable and in control of the fight the whole way through, although it was not a dazzling performance.
In fact Peter’s manager graded the performance as “B minius” so perhaps there is yet more to come from Samuel Peters. His promoter, Dino Duva said the Peter would be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world by the end of 2007.
This is a big statement to make, but can his boxer deliver?
Peter looked quite good in the fight, showing some good footwork and some very good discipline. I think you could put up a decent fight against Oleg Maskaev and the rest of the heavyweight division, but Wladimir Klitschko will be a harder opponent for Peter as he is the only boxer to put a loss on Peters record.
To frank – none of the heavyweight are that good at the moment, so the division is wide open for anyone to take a shot…why not Samuel Peters?
Do you think Samuel Peter can become a boxing champion?

Happy New Year!

I loved Peter’s attitude after the fight…as usual Toney’s wasn’t so great. Hopefully Peter can collect a couple of those belts. We need Heavyweight Unification!

Oleg is not really a world class boxer and has only chanced his way to the title. There is a host of heavyweights that could take the title away from him given the chance. Shannon Briggs, Audley Harrison, Matt Skelton and Danny Williams to mention a few, in fact Bruno could come out of retiremnt and beat him.

I definelty agree - one of the main reasons that the heavyweight division is so s**t is beacause nearly every boxer has a belt or a title of some sort.
Also there is nobady of any real talent at the momenet which is why the old school boxers are thinking of making a comeback as there is no tough opposition! George Foreman said on the radio he was considering coming back, and holyfield has already fought some warm up bouts and his agent has repotedly offer klitskco $20million for a fight….maybe these guys can put some life into this currently fairly dull division….
