Pound for Pound Top 10 Boxers Around Today

By Boxing Daily, Posted September 26th, 2006
Topic: Boxing News, General News

Here are the top ten pound for pound boxers around today as decided by BoxingDaily

1. Floyd Mayweather – Welterweight – United States
Record - 36 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws, 24KOs
Mayweather became a world champion at four different weights with his contentious victory over Zab Judah, although he is yet to completely control a division. He is still likely to be facing Ricky Hatton in the near future. Now that’ll be a good fight!

Floyd Mayweather

2. Marco Antonio Barrera - Super featherweight - Mexico
Record – 61 wins, 4 losses, 0 draws, 42KOs
Marco dismissed any idea that he was a ‘spent force’ by thrashing Morales in the third chapter of their fantastic trilogy. At 31, and battle-scarred, he still remains a great force to be reckoned with.

Marco Antonio Barrera

3. Winky Wright – Middleweight – United States
Record – 50 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw, 25KOs
Wright showed how southpaw was meant to work when he beat Felix Trinidad and believed that he had the better of a draw with middleweight star Jermain Taylor.

Winky Wright

4. Jermain Taylor – Middleweight – United States
Record – 25 wins, 0 losses, 1 draws, 17KOs
Having recently beaten Bernard Hopkins on two occasions, Taylor dug deep to cling onto his belts against a sceptical Wright, who was in doubt over the draw verdict.

Jermain Taylor

5. Manny Pacquiao – Featherweight – Philippines
Record – 41 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws, 33KOs
Pacquiao became the first man to knock out Erik Morales back in January and is arranged to meet him once gain in a vital decider in September.

Manny Pacquiao

6. Joe Calzaghe - Super middleweight - Wales
Record – 41 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws, 31KOs
The Welshman, Calzaghe gave one of the best displays of boxing I have seen in a very long time when he beat Jeff Lacy and the 34 year old now has the world in the palm of his hand.

Joe Calzaghe

7. Ricky Hatton - Light welterweight - England
Record – 40 wins, 0 losses, 0 draws, 30KOs
Hatton won an unconvincing fight to gain the WBA welterweight crown from Luis Collazo and has now decided to move back down to light welterweight. If it hadn’t been for that he would be a lot higher up.

Ricky Hatton

8. Oscar de la Hoya - Light middleweight – United States
Record – 38 wins, 4 losses, 0 draws, 30KOs
Oscar De la Hoya astounded many people all over the world with a classic display against Ricardo Mayorga back in May and he could now be fighting the one-of-a-kind Floyd Mayweather.

Oscar de la Hoya

9. Bernard Hopkins - Light heavyweight – United States
Record – 47 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw, 32KOs
A few years ago he was great! And we saw a little glimpse of that old magic with his triumph over Antonio Tarver, so it seems he could stick around for one last fight, regardless of what he says.

Bernard Hopkins

10. Rafael Marquez – Bantamweight - Mexico
Record – 35 wins, 3 losses, 0 draws, 31KOs
Marquez has held onto the IBF belt since 2003 and in his seven title defences has shown he can box or bang his way to conquest over any opponent. I would have put him higher if he was a bit more ambitious and maybe attempted taking control over another division.

Rafael Marquez

These are my top ten pound for pound boxers that are around at the moment.

It will probably start more arguments than it’ll finish, but that’s boxing!

If You disagree with my ratings or you think I’ve missed someone out please tell me at the bottom of the page.

  1. Great list. You obviously spent a lot of time analysising the various boxers and these are defiently the top ten, although the order can be disputed.

The fact that there are no heavyweights in this list in a tell tale sign of the state that division is in today…

    Comment by Sam — September 26, 2006 @ 7:25 am

  2. I’m just afraid that there aren’t any good heavyweights around today. There are a few up-and-coming ones though, but it has been rather disapointing since the retirement of greats such as Tyson and Lewis. But we are due another ‘Ali’ pretty soon.

I knew not everybody would agree with this ranking, so if you have your own opion please feel free to leave them and I will be sure to reply and maybe even alter my own rankings.

  3. i dissagree with that i think marco antonio barreara should be lower then that i aslo believe that hopkins should be ranked higher then oscar and oscar de la hoya shoudn’t even be on the list who he beat? mayorga already got tko by felix trinidad so who he beat no one that’s who. jermaine taylor got a gift decision over hopkins twice and he is not that high either. i think miquel cotto should be rank in oscar’s place. i would love to see floyd vs cotto at 154 lbs and hbo ppv.

  4. GOOD LIST.. I think in time KESSLER should be added. I believe also in time you will not see Calzghe on your top ten. I believe once he ACTUALLY steps in to American soil and fights REAL fighters he will fall off…. but over all good list!

    Comment by WES — April 23, 2007 @ 10:46 pm

  5. WES!!
IT SEEMS THAT YOU ARE EATING YOUR ‘BAD’ TALK ABOUT CALZAGHE NOW, AND CLAIMING KESSLER WILL BE UP HERE SOON!!!
OH AND ABOUT AMERICA, GET READY FOR ‘THE AMERICAN LEGEND’ BERNARD HOPKINS TO BE DROPPED BY CALZAGHE NEXT YEAR!!!
    BY, A JOE CALZAGHE FAN!!!

  10. One of many examples… Why does people rank Joe Calzaghe so high on the all time gretaest boxers rankings???
    Who have he ever beaten!?
44 unknown realy poor boxers, a 43 year old Hopkins and a 39 year old Jones. Jones who is all about speed and reflexes reached his peak at 2003 against Ruiz. Jones was at his best in -97 when he ko’d griffin in 1 round.
So, who has Joe Calzaghe realy won against???
He’s not on my top 100 all time list for sure!
    LOL!

  11. right calzaghe beat a great chris eubank back in the day eubank knocked him down plus hurt him joe got up and did what no boxer had done b4 to eubank hit him so hard 4 broken ribbs.Calzaghe claimed his WBO super middleweight title in a classic clash with Eubank back in October 1997.
has held it longer than any other boxer for 11 years been floored 3/4 times not lost a fight and gave more to the sport than most other boxers.
i was not a great fan of his for a long time but this guy (joe) has shown what boxing is all about.there is no one for him to fight so i hope he stays out the ring now.funny that every boxer joe has beat all said the same thing “he not beat anyone good who he fight” lasey comes to mind then hopkins for last few to name even jones thought he had him beat after the knock now and thats where it went wrong for him not because he was passed it but because he thought joe was gone to early. joe has been under dog for to long and needs to be moved up to say not even top 100 i think you dont understand the sport.

  15. jasper ,Pacquiao is a good fighter fast when hitting but never stood infront of a guy like hatton who hits and fights the same way.now hatton has sacked his coach gone to mayweather snr for the last few fights he will have hatton can only dream ov becoming £ 4 £ fighter till may 2nd when he does become the £ 4 £ fighter shame he just could not beat the mayweather that time.:(
