Ricky Hatton is The Man to Revive Boxing, Not Joe Calzaghe

Ricky Hatton is The Man

The next two big fights in Britain, and arguably the world, involve the British boxers Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe.

Calzaghe faces Mikkel Kessler and Ricky Hatton is going to fight pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather.

Calzaghe and Hatton are the biggest names in British boxing, there is no doubt about this, but I would argue that there is a massive difference between where Hatton is at, and where Calzaghe is.

Hatton is world class, in different weight divisions and has proven this against top quality opponents such as Kosta Tszyu and Castillo.

What has Calzaghe done? Not much.
Okay he has held the super-middleweight title for a decade and ever so many fights, but that doesn’t mean much to me.

For me its who you beat, not how many you beat.

Therefore Hatton is the man to put the life back into boxing, especially British boxing, not Calzaghe.

WHEN, not if, Hatton beats the ever mouthy Mayweather, then his legacy will be sealed, as one of the greatest boxers ever, and miles ahead of Calzaghe, who may beat Kessler, but Kessler is nowhere near Mayweather and class that Hatton is fighting at.

What do you think?

  1. wise up calzaghe is a legendery boxer and has won the respect that he has now threw hard fights and great boxing skill in my opinion both are great boxers and exhibit british boxing talent but calzaghe has worked as hard as hatton to get were he is and deserves to be there he has fought threw injury in his hands and despite this still remains unbeaten.

  2. Why does it have to be one and not the other? Thats the UKs problem . Too tribal! SugarRay,Hagler and Hearns all made the sport in the US. It’s about time we ended silly little arguments like this.

  3. Rob, spot on, couldn’t agree more mate.
As for the clown who wrote the article!? he clearly has no real idea of boxing. You cannot compare as these fighters are so different. If so called “save boxing” is such an issue surely having both there is better than one, why can both not save boxing along with some of the other exeptional talent coming though Britain.
One last point, Calzaghe has fought many top rate fighter, this guy should do his research.
The only names he pulled out the bag for hatton were two once great but washed up fighters who promptly retired afterword.
Calzaghe fought a young undefeeted lion in Jeff Lacy and is doing it again with Kessler… the man has balls of steel.

  4. If Calzaghe is a legenadryy boxer why has’nt he attempted to move up a weight class to light heavy weight and fight real world class fighters such as bernard hopkins and winky wright. He feels unbeatable at super middleweight and knows that if he moves up a weight class he is likely to be beaten and lose his ‘legenadary’ status

  5. -> Johnny,Calzaghe is 35 years old, i think we can forgive him for staying at super middleweight, and to the guy who wrote this article, It was always going to be difficult for Calzaghe to give you the ‘underdog’ style fight you seem to need him to prove himself in, as he has been at the TOP of his game for a decade.
Best of luck to Hatton in the up coming Mayweather fight, please let him silence that gobby yank !

  9. Johnny — Caalzaghe offered to fight Hopkins 6 YEARS AGO. Hopkins declined. Similarly, he offered to fight Roy Jones. Jones Declined. I’m pretty sure there are others… who also declined. Bye.

  10. You’ve just proved that you know very little about boxing, with your prediction.

And stop hating Joe Calzaghe; he is a World class boxer.

    Comment by Charles — December 25, 2007 @ 11:49 am

  11. haha “world class”? Joe has never left his back yard, he has never fought anyone that is great. Kessler was his ONLY really good challenger, and Kessler was never stunned, hurt or tired. So little Joe is by no means a “legend”. He will never be anything more and thats why everyone’s vagina hurts when you mention his name. Because you know, everyone knows that hes garbage. Hatton is your ONE and only true champ.

  12. wes, are you so attracted to slagging calzaghe because you secretly want to be his lover? you are an ass, and when did jermain taylor leave his backyard tit head? im looking forward to the day joe makes easy work of hopkins, jones or tarver, pavlik is the man to fear not those three, who are well past their best, why dont you learn to spell, and actually give a proper opinion, instaed of dissing calzaghe because you fear he will beat your best fighters. grow up man, and learn about the sport nobby

  16. Unless Joe takes some big fights, and wins them, Hatton will always be ranked higher in my mind.
