It seems Ricky Hatton will not be fighting Oscar De La Hoya. De La Hoya was going to fight Mayweather before his retirement announcement, the fight was set for the 20 September. From this rumours started about Hatton taking Mayweather’s place in the fight, but Ray Hatton (Ricky Hatton’s father and manager) has said that his son needed more time to prepare.
“An approach has been made but it would be to soon, Richard only fought two weeks ago”, Hatton Sr. said. Hatton, the light-welterweight champion, was stopped after 10 rounds in a battle with Mayweather last December, Hatton appeared to have be set on fighting Mayweather again. He said the retirement of Mayweather would not affect Hatton’s career, and he would remain fully focused on his November fight against light-welterweight IBF champion Paulie Malignaggi.
In answer to Mayweather’s retirement Hatton Sr. said that “we always said to Floyd, you know where we are if you want the fight, but no massive plans have gone out of the window because of his retirement”. And that he also thought that if the money was right, Mayweather might change his mined in 12 months time.
It is possible that without Hatton, De La Hoya could fight Winky Wright, or perhaps the winner of the Miguel Cotto in September .
Do you think that Mayweather will come out of retirement to fight Hatton?
