With the retirement of Mayweather, Ricky Hatton has moved into a position for a superfight with De La Hoya later in the year. Hatton is due to fight Pauile Malignaggi in November, and could change course and fight the American, with the opportunity to generate huge pay-per-view sales.
The American Ronald “Winky” Wright, or the winner of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight in July could also be opponents for De La Hoya. Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy said that “there will be an announcement this week” concerning De La Hoya’s opponents. There has also been a lot of talk between Hatton’s management and Golden Boy behind the scenes since the build-up to the Mayweather-Hatton Fight last December.
De La Hoya seemed to put himself out of the picture of a contest with Hatton after the Mancunian’s victory over Juan Lazcano at the Manchester City football ground last moth. But at the same time the American proclaimed his awe for Hatton’s crowd filling capability.
