The trainer Freddie Roach has added an interesting new twist to the story of the Filipino Manny Pacquiao by saying that Golden Boy Promotions might want to put up Oscar De La Hoya in stead of Ricky Hatton, also handled by the Golden Boy promotions. “To be honest with you I think Manny can beat Oscar”. Also that Pacquiao’s speed would be too much for “an old man”, like De La Hoya.
Although for this fight to go ahead, “He must at least come down to 147 pounds”, in reference to De La Hoya. Roach was De La Hoya’s trainer for his fight against Mayweather. Following Mayweather’s announcement of retirement, the September rematch between De La Hoya and Mayweather is out of the window, and that Hatton will not be ready to fight by then, a Pacquiao - De La Hoya Fight could happen, it depend’s on Golden Boy’s willingness to lose the weight.
In the Pacquiao camp there is opposition from Michael Koncz, some sort of advisor with close ties to Bob Arum. Konzc said he would “do my best to convince Manny not to take the De La Hoya fight”. Konzc agreed that De La Hoya had slowed down, but “Manny may be quicker on his feet, Oscar still has power because a boxer never loses power. And if De La Hoya catches Manny, there might be some serious kind of injury there”.
Do you think a De La Hoya- Pacquiao fight could happen?
What do you think the result would be?
