WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe is not bothered by Peter Manfredo Jnr’s warning that he will bring to the end the Welshman’s supremacy as WBO world champion. Manfredo, whose claim to fame was from the reality television series ‘The Contender’, claims he will get the better of Calzaghe in their Cardiff clash coming up in March.

But in return to this Calzaghe said: “He’s well known in America and a tough kid. But this is my 20th defence and ninth year as champion, and he is not going to spoil that.” 25-year-old Manfredo came runner-up on the first series of ‘The Contender’ and now has a professional record of 26 victories and 3 losses. But in response Calzaghe said: “There is a world of difference between being a reality TV star and a world champion boxer. He has only seen the glitz and glamour of the sport - now he is in for the real thing (read more…)

Calzaghe Granted British Admiration

It is no surprise the Welshman was handed the honour at the British Boxing Board of Control awards ceremonial on Thursday in London.34-year-old Calzaghe was most likely to pick up the prize after he amalgamated the WBO and IBF titles by defeating previously triumphant American Jeff Lacy back in March. Kevin Anderson’s breathtaking 10th-round stoppage triumph over Young Muttley was awarded the Contest of the Year (read more…)

Calzaghe Beats Bika

34-year-old Joe Calzaghe held onto his WBO and IBF super middleweight titles last night with a unanimous point’s victory over Sakio Bika. But the great Welshman was given a thorough workout by the immensely strong Cameroonian fighter in a brutal ‘street-style’ encounter.

Calzaghe Beats Bika

Calzaghe has now made 19 defences of his WBO belt which is only six short of heavyweight legend Joe Louis’ all-time record of 26. But Calzaghe, who is undefeated in 42 bouts, will not forget Bika in a hurry after a hard night’s work in Manchester yesterday. The Welsh superstar surprised the judges enough to claim a unanimous decision but he had to fight the majority of the bout with a badly-cut left eye from an intentional head-butt. Bika’s raw power paid off as he continually knocked Calzaghe out of his regularly stylish style. But later into the fight he was docked a point for using his head illegally. Even though he was so dominant against the unbeaten Jeff Lacy that he trashed seven months ago, Calzaghe was made to look a little shabby at times by the aggressive Bika. Calzaghe was regularly pushed back by his opponent’s powerful right and had blood pouring down his face from the cut above his eye and was winded by a low blow in a wild final round (read more…)

Joe Calzaghe will move even nearer to one of boxing’s all time best records if he wins over Sakio Bika tonight. The WBO super middleweight champion is making his 19th defence of his title in Manchester tonight, which he won from Chris Eubank nine years ago. After this he will be six bouts away from heavyweight legend Joe Louis’ all-time record of 25 defences. Even through Calzaghe said “He is such a legend I would not want to beat his record - I would share it.” But nevertheless the great Welshman is not overlooking Bika’s skills by saying: “I have too much to lose by not focusing.” Although it is his 19th WBO title defence it will only be his first defence of his IBF crown that he won from Jeff Lacy back in March.

Calzaghe for Record of the Ring

That marvellous presentation of boxing enhanced his boxing status all around the globe. Calzaghe, who clearly has both feet firmly on the ground said: “I have so many goals left to achieve in this sport but I know in boxing you are only as good as your last fight. Everything can change if I do not take this fight as seriously as all the rest. I just hope I go in there and hit the guy clean and come out without getting injured because I want to keep busy next year and I need to keep the momentum going.” Calzaghe seems to be in a confident mood and even wore an Italian football hat when he was on the scales at yesterday’s weigh-in (read more…)
