Jermain Taylor is using his worst ever fight as an incentive for his WBC middleweight title defence in opposition to Uganda’s Kassim Ouma this Saturday. The, usually very consistent American 28-year-old, was lucky to get a draw against Winky Wright back in June and is desperate to improve upon his awful performance.

After watching the bout he said: “I watched the tape and I saw all the mistakes I made. It was the worst fight I could ever have fought. I’m not saying Ouma is a lesser opponent, but I’m supposed to look good this fight,” Taylor became champion back in July of 2005 by beating Bernard Hopkins with a points victory in Las Vegas; he then went onto beat him there once again later in December with another decision (read more…)

Ronald “Winky” Wright has become even closer to a potential re-match with middleweight ruler Jermain Taylor after he beat Ghanaian old hand Ike Quartey. Wright once conquered the light middleweight division between 2001 and 2005 but after a great triumph over Felix Trinidad in his first fight at middleweight he drew with Taylor when they clashed back in June.

Wright out-pointed Quartey in his hometown of Tampa, Florida, after unbelievably throwing more than 1,000 punches and scoring a knockdown in the second round. The one time welterweight world champ Quartey harassed Wright throughout and made a bid for the win in a topsy-turvey final round (read more…)

Ex world middle weight champion, Bernard Hopkins, has proclaimed his objective to step back into the ring after just six months of retirement and compete for a heavyweight world title.

Hopkins, who spent most of his career fighting at middle weight, stepped out of the ring after defeating Antonio Tarver in a light heavyweight contest back in June. But now the 41-year-old wants to confront Oleg Maskaev for his WBC heavyweight crown, he said this on the matter: “I want to bring the heavyweight championship back to the United States. I’m going to be the guy that everybody says preserved the reputation of the American fighter.” Hopkins claims that he currently weighs 180 pounds, 20 pounds above the middleweight fighting boundaries, but he intends to add on another 20 during the next month. “I plan on being a heavyweight by the end of the year (read more…)

Joe Calzaghe’s promoter, Frank Warren, plans to publicize a “big fight” for the super middleweight world champion some time in the up coming week. The bout is most likely to be in Cardiff next February; with Warren hoping he can secure an American challenger.
If the Great Welshman triumphs, Warren claims a “mega fight” will follow in the summer, which is most likely to be in opposition to Jermain Taylor, 28, over in the States. This news may ruin the instant hopes of Denmark’s WBC & WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler who is desperate for a unification bout with Wales’ WBO & IBF legend (read more…)

Joe Calzaghe feels that he is ready to fight Bernard Hopkins in America after his vicious world title bout with Sakio Bika. On Saturday night he made the 19th defence of his super middleweight titles against the Cameroonian in Manchester. And is now only one short of Hopkins’ record of 20 defences at middleweight.

Calzaghe’s Promoter Frank Warren established he is preparing a date for Calzaghe in the States in either February or March. “People think I’m a home boy, but I’ll fight Bernard Hopkins in his own garden,” the Welshman said. “Hopkins is the sort of fighter I’d get up for. I need those big name fights to bring out the best in me.” Nevertheless, with the 41-year-old Hopkins talking about challenging WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev, Denmark’s Mikkel Kessler would show to be a more sensible option.Kessler bulldozed Germany’s Markus Beyer inside three rounds in Copenhagen on Saturday night to add the WBC crown to his WBA belt. And with Calzaghe as the holder of the IBF and WBO titles, a fight between the two of them would be a rare four-belt unification bout (read more…)
