The Mayweather-De La Hoya rematch on the 20 September was cancelled when Mayweather announced his retirement. The effects of this fight cancellation means that De La Hoya will only be fighting once more before retiring himself. It seems Ricky Hatton will not be fighting Oscar De La Hoya. De La Hoya was going to fight Mayweather before his retirement announcement, the fight was set for the 20 September. Miguel Cotto managed to stop fellow Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana in Atlantic City during the fifth round to take hold of the vacant WBA welterweight crown.

The WBA belt was given up by Manchester’s Ricky Hatton earlier this year. Cotto put Quintana onto the canvas twice in round the fifth round and managed to bloody his opponent before he was stopped from coming out of his corner for round number six. It was the ex-WBO light welterweight legend’s first fight at 147lb and he was able to improve his unblemished record even more to 28 wins, 23 knockouts and still with no defeats (read more…)
