Taylor Inspired by Wright Exhibit

Jermain Taylor is using his worst ever fight as an incentive for his WBC middleweight title defence in opposition to Uganda’s Kassim Ouma this Saturday. The, usually very consistent American 28-year-old, was lucky to get a draw against Winky Wright back in June and is desperate to improve upon his awful performance.

After watching the bout he said: “I watched the tape and I saw all the mistakes I made. It was the worst fight I could ever have fought. I’m not saying Ouma is a lesser opponent, but I’m supposed to look good this fight,” Taylor became champion back in July of 2005 by beating Bernard Hopkins with a points victory in Las Vegas; he then went onto beat him there once again later in December with another decision.

But he was then displayed disastrous performance in his compulsory bout in Memphis against “Winky” Wright. Ouma was once the junior middleweight champion of the world and Taylor is definitely not taking him on light-heartedly; and has been working hard with his famous trainer, Emanuel Steward, who took the place Pat Burns after his second bout with Hopkins.

Taylor said this on the subject: “Ouma’s style is a pressure style, so all my sparring partners were young guys who are still fighting who come with a lot of pressure. I feel like I’m still learning,” he added. “I feel like Emanuel Steward is teaching new things, but I’m still learning from stuff Pat Burns taught me.” But I honestly don’t think Taylor can get any worse than he did against Wright and if he is really determined to do well there is no reason why he cannot do so.

  1. Taylor = no convincing wins against elite fighters

  2. I don’t think you can write Taylor off because he is a good fighter. Just because he doesn’t always perform at his best doesn’t mean he can’t fight - all great fighters have off days just look at Calzaghe, Tyson and Ali.

He is still good and I believe that he will prove himself in his next fight.
