Danny Williams has weighed in at 16st 14lbs for his fight with the curretn British heavyweight boxing champion, Scott Gammer.
This is a low weight for Williams, who weighed in at four stones more when met fought Matt Skelton last July, and it is five pounds less than what he weighed in to beat Mike Tyson.
Scott Gammer, who is unbeaten, weighed in at 17st 11lb, a career high weight for him. The pair fight at Neath’s Cwrt Herbert Sport Centre tonight.
Scott Gammer’s promoter, Paul Coyce said, “Scott bulked up as he thought Danny would be heavier, but he’s still fit”
This is Gammer’s second defence of his British crown, but he wants recognition for his record of 17-0-1 with 9 KO’s. Williams is the biggest fight for him so far in his career and he is hoping that if he beats him he will gets the recognition that the thinks he deserves.
Gammer said:
“There are a lot of top fighters from Britain out there and I seem to get largely ignored,
“But Williams is a big name and people will be watching this fight and they will see just what I can do.
“I was surprised Danny didn’t retire after the beating Audley Harrison gave him, and I’d be very surprised if he carries on after the beating I’m going to give him.”
Williams has come a long way down, to now fighting in a 1200 seater leisure centre, from boxing in Las Vegas for the WBC heavyweight title against Vitali Klitschko.
But he has lost his last couple of fights against Matt Skelton and Audley Harrison, and this has dragged his record down to 36-6 with 29 KO’s.
Danny Williams said:
“I just want to show people I am not finished, but really it is about taking this fight to see what I have got left and then deciding where I am going to go from there,
“People ask me how I can get motivated when I have beaten Mike Tyson and fought in Las Vegas, but I am definitely motivated because I know that if I lose I am finished, and that is motivation in itself.
“I have got myself in very good shape for this fight and my work-rate has improved. I know I have been written off many times before, and I keep coming back.”
Who do you think will win out of Gammer and Williams?
What is the next step for the winner of this fight?
I think the next step for the winner of this fight will be to fight whoever loses the Skelton-Sprott fight. Whoever wins that should then fight the winner of that bout. However the winner of the Skelton-Sprott fight will want a shot at the heavyweight title before fighting either of these boxers.
So could one of these fighters challenge for a world title soon?
