Junior Witter has been trying to get a fight with Ricky Hatton for years.

The WBC light welterweight champion Junior Witter has told Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, the IBF title holder, that if they are going to fight, then it is now or never!

Witter said: “There is a window of opportunity, but if we are not careful we are going to miss it. If we’re going to meet, it has to be this summer. Nothing else makes sense for Hatton apart from this, unless he is scared. I am a British fighter holding the WBC belt. The most prestigious belt. A belt he has never won.

However Ricky Hatton is geared up to fight Castillo next, but Witter says that this is the wrong fight for him.

“If they go for Castillo first, what’s the point? He’s a blown up lightweight who hasn’t properly established himself at 10 stone. Castillo isn’t even ranked by the IBF,” Witter said.

“If anyone thinks Hatton v Witter can wait until 2008 they are badly mistaken. Someone will have caught up with Hatton by then. If he wants the biggest fight of his career, he has to step up now.

“Apparently, Hatton would like to give me a beating, but he is worried about giving me a pay-day. Well here is the solution: winner takes all.

“That way, he can give me a good beating for nothing.”

Well Witter is right in that Castillo has really established himself as a 10 stone boxer, but he has become a world champion at SIX different weights, surely this is enough to warrant him a fight with Hatton?

Why is Witter saying this when everyone knows that Hatton will be fighting Castillo next?

Also I think that Hatton vs. Witter will have to wait to 2008 as Hatton wont stop his fight with Castillo to face Witter. I don’t think Hatton is too worried about getting belts at this stage of his career. That’s why he is probably going to give up his IBF title to fight Castillo instead of N’Dou. For Ricky Hatton, the fighters are bigger that the belts.

And if Hatton beats Castillo then he should be all set for a boxing fight against Floyd Mayweather, who is much a much more worthy and lucrative opponent that Witter.

So Witter will have to wait for the Castillo fight the Mayweather fight, and then MAYBE he might get a match with Hatton. However if Hatton loses to Castillo then we could see a Witter/Hatton showdown sooner rather than later.

What do you make of this ultimatum that Witter has given Hatton?
